MAGE POROB

Mythological introduction to Mage Porob:

 It is the festival of ‘creation’ that celebrated as the principal festival among Ho tribe. In a strong mythological believe ‘HO’ human being is created from this ‘mage’. The first ever man on the earth ‘Luku Kola’ was created by ‘Singbonga’ by His divine power with an intention to spread the living world that can worship and serve him and other deities. The idea of singbonga was to spread the empty world with humanbeings and make it beautiful one. Luku Kola was created at ‘Luku buru’ (Luku mountain). But soon He realized this holy endeavour is certainly impossible without a female partner. So He created ‘Luku Kuli’-the first woman created by his divine power at the ‘Iche: gala’ (iche: river). They both grown up and attained juvenility. One day Luku Kola was roaming through jungle and mountains of Luku buru with ‘rutu’ (‘flute’-a traditional musical instrument of Hos). While roaming around the sacred mountain he was playing flute. At the same time Luku Kuli was roaming in the jungle beside the river bank of ‘iche: gala’ singing song.  Music and melody of the both appealed to each other. They got attracted to each other and met with fascination. Their first meeting is termed as ‘Sukan‘as per the traditional belief. As per belief they met several times after that in many places named as RASUI GALA, BULUNG BANDELA, RUNGKO LATA, MAD KO JALA etc. The creator soon realized that in order to spread the human population on the earth Luku Kola and Luku Kuli must came in physical contact. It is unlikely that they would go for sexual intercourse in a normal way. The process which the Sing bonga thought out to make Luku Kola & Luku Kuli to get physical intimacy is of 8 days. Later on this 8 days process is remembered and celebrated as mage porob among Ho adivasis.

Present context of Mage porob:

Mage porob is now the principal festival of the Ho tribe. It is celebrated usually in the month of Mage (January-February), when the granaries are full of paddy. For welfare of the villagers, the Ho people worship the Singhbonga and Deshauli along with some other Bongas of lesser importance during this festival.

1-Anader (Anafer):

 One day Luku Kuli attained menstruation at the time of New Moon during the month of Mage (Dec- Jan) .This first day of menstruation cycle is known as ‘anader’. The literary meaning of ‘anader’ is entry with warm welcome. So the process of menstruation to meet the divine order of creation is warmly greeted.

On the second day ‘Singi Bonga’ came in the image of bull and aware them that the time has come to fulfill the divine design of creation. This day is known as ‘gaumaara’.

3- Ote Ili (Oze Qli) :

 

Third day, bleeding is increased in the menstruation and flowed in to earth. That day the ‘moon goddess’ came with the ‘nage-bindi era’ (water deity).  According to the tradition,   this third day is known as ‘ote ili’ (rice beer poured to the earth).She taught Luku Kuli the importance of water and significance of menstruation.

4- Heh Sakam (Hev Skm):

 On the fourth day, ‘aang-oh ipil’(morning star) and ‘jumbli ipil’ came in the image of ‘dansari bonga’ and ‘aah bonga’ and taught them basic knowledge of technology to lead daily life and especially use of cloth.  This day is known as ‘Heh Sakam’. It is believed from that day onwards Luku Kuli learnt to cover her body by use of clothes.

 5- Gurih Porob (Gurih Porob/Loyo):

  ‘Guan bonga’ came on the fifth day and taught them the use of fire. He blessed them by performing some rituals at flaming fire with hymn and assured that the fire will remain with their good and bad time. It is known as ‘gurih porob’.

6- Mage Marang Porob (Mge Mr# porob):

 The sixth day is known as ‘Mage marang porob‘or main day of this festival. On that day ‘Desauli’ appeared before the Luku Kola and Luku Kuli and they worshipped Him by illi (rice beer), lamah ( the fruit of rung creeper), manijang (mustard seed), ramtia(teel), tilming, duna(the rosin of sal tree) as offering with deep respect and blessed them as new couple (Nama Kulgiye) to remain forever . As a common practice since time immemorial, this day is being celebrated with superb by uttering obscene language openly.

7- Jatara ( Jzra) :

 On the seventh day ‘pauni bonga’ came and taught them to dance together by making chain in cross-hands. Luku Kola and Luku kuli took illi (rice beer) and enjoyed by dancing and singing. This day is also known as ‘Banda Pana’ (Bnfa P^a) for Luku Kola- Luku Kuli- the New couple (Nma Kulgiya). With drinking ‘illi’ (rice beer) they felt exciting and performed the sexual act of enjoying worldly pleasure and shouldered the divine responsibility for creation given by God. So this day bears special significance.
