“KOL GURU LAKO BODRA” – The Pioneer of “Warang Chiti”, the script for Ho language was born in the village named Paaseya of Singbhum District (KOLHAN), Jharkhand in a MANAKI Family on 19th September 1919. His father’s name was Lebeya Bodra & Mother was Jana Kui. gl Date of Birth: 19 September 1919 Date of death: 29th June 1986 “KOL GURU LAKO BODRA” – The Pioneer of “Warang Chiti”, the script for Ho language was born in the village named Paaseya of Singbhum District (KOLHAN), Jharkhand in a MANAKI Family on 19th November 1919. His father’s name was Lebeya Bodra & Mother was Jana Kui. He got his primary education at Badcham Hatu School. After completion of primary education he got admitted at PURUIYAN Middle School. He was inspired by the subject “Matru Bhasa ki Mahatwa” Which was written by Acharya Mahaveer Prasad Dwibedi. He then took a promising legendary step to develop a script of his own “Ho” language and to compose Ho literature for the community he belongs to- would feel proud of it. gl2 (The much celebrated statue of Bodra Sayob) Thereafter, he was sent to GRAMMAR SCHOOL (also known as Anglo-Indian School where Foreigners studied) at Chakradharpur where, the son- Prince KUONR & daughter -Princess PADMABATI of the King Narapati Singh of Chakradharpur also studied. Due to his extra ordinary talent and knowledge he was counted among the best talented students in the school. He got opportunity to visit PALACE and LIBRARY of the Royal King family. There he started searching for ancient literature and Ho script with his best efforts. He also got supported by Miss Rojlin one of his teacher, who provided the books such as- ‘Mother India’, “History of India” etc. Thus he studied ancient Indian culture and tradition deeply in everyday life. He soon developed his command over Bangla, Odiya, Urdu, Hindi and English during High School period. gl3 (The statue of Lako Bodra at Paaseya worshiped by a disciple)   Besides Studies, he was also an outstanding Football and a Flute player (RUTU ORONG). He worshipped Gods and Goddesses from his early childhood. He roamed around the jungles, caves and places of ancient historical places. This made his grandmother once sang a song for him as follows: “Dishum gem hiyating tan, Raiji gem chaka ting tan Buru rubu-rubu ko ge panja jom me”. While studying his High School at Zilla School, Chaibasa , he met Dishum Gomke Jaipal Singh Munda, who was the great Tribal Leader of Freedom Movement and first Captain of Indian Hockey Team. Also the topper in Indian Civil Services being conducted in London and initiated movement for creation of JHARKHAND STATE. He got influenced by great personality of Marang Gomke and his talent was also recognized by Marang Gomke. Thus he became closer to Jaipal Singh Munda. During Second World War, he got opportunity to visit Jalandhar (Punjab) with Dishum Gomke Jaipal Singh Munda. There he visited MOHENJO-DARO, HARAPPA and other various part of undivided-India. In Mohenjo Daro and Harappa, he observed DIRI SASAN, ILI MATIA and other evidences by which he believed that Ho (HOLO) people were established there and had their own developed Literature, Script, Bonga-Buru and other social rituals. He got admission into JALANDHAR CITY COLLEGE, Punjab wherein he completed his B.Sc. and a degree in HOMOEPATHY. Though he started primary education from BADCHAMHATU but graduated from JALANDHAR CITY COLLEGE, Punjab. Thus he got huge opportunity to explore the ocean of the knowledge and excelled his intellect and vision to serve and to establish the history and distinct socio-cultural identity of his own Ho people. gl4 WARANG CHITI: The “Warang Chiti” script which is believed to be invented by Deowan Turi in 13th Century, Guru Lako Bodra, rediscovered and devised in 1950 with the intention of creating a visually distinctive script for the HO language. He visited various places, hills, forests, prominent persons and devoted his whole life for development of warang chiti and Ho literature as such: • HE WONDERED CHITIR BILLA AND CHANDAN GIRI FOREST IN KEONJHAR (ODISHA). • HE VISITED PALACE and ROYAL LIBRARY OF THE KING KEONJHAR GARH AND AVAILED BENEFIT OF LEARNING. • HE ESTABLISHED “ETE: TURTUNG AKALA” (ASHRAM) IN 1955 AT JODAPOKHOR, JHINKPANI FOR SOCIAL AND EDUCATIONAL WORKS. • IN THE YEAR 1958 HE MET JAWAHARLAL NEHRU, THE PRIME MINISTER OF INDIA AND APPRAISED ABOUT HO LANGUAGE, CULTURE, WARANG CHITI. • IN THE YEAR 1960, HE COLLECTED FROM MAYURBHANJ SIMILIPAL HILLS AN ALPHABET (HOROF) WHICH RELATES TO MOHENJO DARO- HARAPPA CIVILZATION AND UNDER RESEARCH AT ARCHAEOLOGICAL DEPARTMENT, GOVT. INDIA. • HE GOT OPPORTUNITY TO SHOW HIS TALENT AT NATIONAL LEVEL IN NEW DELHI. DURING PRIME MINISTERSHIP OF SMT. INDIRA GANDHI IN THE YEAR 1976. HE REPRESENTED TO SHOW “HO CULTURE” IN DELHI. GURU LAKO BODRA WAS AWARDED AS “CHIEF OF THE CHIEF” OF THE AKHIL BHARATIYA ADIVASI CULTURE AND RECEIVED “GOLD MEDAL” FROM SMT. INDIRA GANDHI. • ON INDEPENDENCE DAY CELEBRATION, GOVT. OF INDIA INVITED HIM SOME TIMES TO REPRESENT HO SOCIETY. • HE WAS ASSOCIATED WITH AKASH VANI , RANCHI FOR MUSIC FOR LONG TIME AND WAS ALSO MEMBER OF ADVISORY COMMITTEE, DEPARTMENT OF TRIBAL AND REGIONAL LANGUAGE, RANCHI UNIVERSITY ACCEPTANCE OF “WARANG CHITI” BY HO SOCIETY: It was not so easy task to popularize Warang Chiti among the common masses of Ho community. The Warang Chiti script was accepted by social leaders and intellectuals of Ho society not so easily and faced so many hindrances. Guru Lako Bodra put his best efforts to convince and explain Ho society about usage of Warang Chiti script based on (in terms of) science, necessity and phonetic system by organizing various meeting and conference. Thereafter, the intellectual linguistics team and HO Society accepted the “WARANG CHITI”. In the year 1983, under the Chairmanship of Sri C. M. Singh, (Ex-MP), SIDAHORA SUSAR AKALA, BHUBANESWAR, a leading social organization of Ho community conducted a Conference at JODA, KEONJHAR to select BEST SCRIPT (LIPI) amongst the SCRIPTS discovered/Invented by Adivasi linguistics related to Austro-Asiatic Munda language family. Due to lack of time no final decision could be taken and again in October 1984 a 3days conference was organized under the chairmanship of Shri Raghunath Hembram (the then M.L.A, Karanjia) and was participated by large numbers of Ho Intellectuals where seven numbers of linguistics from aborigine communities. They are as follows: • Hirle Purushotam Godsora- “SHRITI LIPI” • Hirle Sangram Sindhu Surin- “OWAR ANKAGAR” • Hirle Ghanshyam Kalundiya- “OL-CHITI” • Hirle Raghunath Purty – ——— “ HO-OL” • Hirle Purushotam Hembram— “ADING ANKA” • Hirle Rahidas Singh Nag——– “MUNDARIBANI HISIR CHAMPA” • Hirle Lako Bodra—————— “ WARANG CHITI” Ultimately, after through critical review, intense debate and discussion among participants from the Ho society, it was unanimously decided that the “Warang Chiti” of Pandit Dr. Lako Bodra would be appropriate script for Ho language and would need to be developed further. Revolution in Ho literature and Script: Kol Guru Lako Bodra wanted to provide a specially designed script for Ho language which he was successful after lots of hardship. The attempt made by him has revolutionized the field of Ho literature and script. His seminal works on Ho culture, religious beliefs, Ho world view and scientific book on script are of highest standard. He has explained in details about the Ho ancient history, mythology, festivals and rituals which will be milestone for Ho community. It has guided and will show the path to entire Ho community for long time. Today Ho people across the states of Jharkhand, Odisha and west Bengal are working with their own capacity to spread the script among Ho people. Some of the books written by him are as follows: 1. Saar Hora (7 parts): its deals with ancient religious beliefs of Ho community, the Ho world view and the detailed description about festivals of Ho community. 2.
